Invisalign: A Game-Charger in Giving Adults a Perfect Smile

The benefits of braces are clear, and nothing can compare to the feeling a person gets when they look in the mirror and see a beautiful set of straight teeth.

At the same time, braces come with a stigma. Despite over 25% of braces wearers being adults, braces are often a source of embarrassment — sometimes to the point that adults with braces don’t want to socialize or date during their orthodontic treatment.

Thankfully, braces aren’t the only option for adults who want straight teeth. Invisalign® clear aligners are a game-changing way to achieve perfect teeth as an adult.

If you're interested in getting a perfect smile with Invisalign, visit our team at Willow Glen Dental Care in San Jose, California. We’re proud to offer state-of-the-art comprehensive dental care for your whole family. In this blog, Danielle Wehle, DDS, and George Kuo, DDS, discuss the basics and benefits of Invisalign and if it may be a good match to help you achieve a perfect smile.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is the name for a set of clear aligners that straighten teeth over time. The biggest difference between Invisalign and braces is that you switch out a set of aligners about every two weeks. The aligners apply pressure to your teeth and gradually move them into the desired position. With braces, brackets and wires are cemented to your teeth.

Custom-made for you

To start the Invisalign process, a team member at our practice will scan your mouth with high-tech computer imaging software to create a 3-D model of your mouth. The aligners are then custom-made using the 3D model as a guide. The imaging software even uses an advanced algorithm to ensure that just the right amount of pressure is placed on each tooth.

What can Invisalign fix?

The custom nature of Invisalign means that your aligners can fix a variety of issues. Common treatment cases include the following:

You don’t have to have any of these specific problems to be a suitable candidate. Anyone who wants generally straighter teeth may benefit from Invisalign.

The benefits

Invisalign aligners should be worn 20 to 22 hours a day, meaning you can take them out when you need to. You eat like you normally would and don’t have to eliminate certain foods that may get stuck in braces. You can also brush and flush normally — no need for special tools to floss or get food out of a bracket.

The aligners are also less painful. They’re snug but generally more comfortable than braces. You can also take them out for sports and don’t have to worry about a wayward ball or elbow smashing your lip into a mental bracket. The biggest advantage, of course, is that Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible.
