Gingivitis Treatment in San Jose, CA

Periodontal disease is an aggressive form of gum disease and is a build-up of harmful disease-causing bacteria. The bacteria cause the gums and bone surrounding your teeth to deteriorate creating “pockets” around your teeth. You cannot always see or even feel these pockets and you cannot effectively clean them out with just a toothbrush. The depth of the pocket is directly related to the possibility of losing the tooth. It is vital that you seek treatment immediately for gum disease. Dr. Danielle Wehle can provide gingivitis treatment in San Jose, CA.

It is best to diagnose and treat gum disease as early as possible to avoid the more severe effects of periodontal disease. If caught early enough, Dr. Wehle might suggest a very effective periodontal therapy called scaling and root planing. For this procedure, Dr. Wehle will make sure you are sufficiently numb allowing you to have the most comfortable experience possible while at her office. Special hand instruments as well as ultrasonic instruments are used to remove all of the harmful calculus and tarter above and below the gum line. The surfaces of the roots are cleaned and smoothed to promote reattachment of the tissue. The periodontal pockets will be cleaned out and antibiotics could be administered directly to the site to close the pockets and encourage healing. Scaling and root planing can lower pocket depths up to two to three millimeters on average. That is enough to save your teeth!

It is important that periodontal patients maintain excellent home care. Dr. Wehle might even prescribe an anti-microbial mouthwash to help control the rapid growth of bacteria. You might need to see Dr. Wehle’s hygienist more often than a regular cleaning as your pocket depths will be closely monitored and measured to stave off your gum disease. Be sure to keep Dr. Wehle informed of any medications you are taking and any serious health conditions that could be affected by the gum disease.

Scaling and root planing is most effective when periodontal disease is caught early. Do not lose your teeth and health to gum disease! Call Dr. Wehle as soon as possible to schedule your appointment.
